Winning prominent coverage for an innovative acquisition

SurModics Inc., medical-device-coating technology company, tapped Padilla Speer Beardsley to announce its 2005 purchase of InnoRx, an innovator in eye-disease treatment.

Together, the companies had developed a drug-delivery implant to treat two retinal diseases that are the leading causes of vision loss. The new therapy potentially could make Minnesota-based SurModics a significant player in the fast-growing ophthalmology market.

Padilla prepared a detailed timeline for the highly confidential announcement and developed key messages. We then designed an online media kit that featured multiple images, and positioned it with selected sell-side analysts and media contacts.

SurModics' acquisition won prominent, full-color coverage in the Twin Cities' two major daily newspapers, and in influential medical publications, including InVivo, Medical Device Daily and The Gray Sheet. Nationally, Forbes Online and the Associated Press both covered the news. Motley Fool now tracks SurModics' stock regularly.
